Bringing In A New Way To Recruit IFS Officers

Changing Civil Services & IAS Exam Preparation, Chennai

For some time now, people have argued that the current method of selecting people for the post of IFS is incompetent. Presently, any person who wants to make a career out of diplomacy needs to pass the civil service examination that is conducted by UPSC and then go through a gruelling training program for two years. It is here that they are taught all the aspects of diplomacy and policies, and it is this phase that majority questions. How can you show a person to be diplomatic and build a relationship with other countries in just two years?
The foremost coaching institute for IAS in Chennai weighs in on this never-ending debate. They believe that every diplomat is like a foot soldier of the country and a representative. They are the first line of defense when it comes to foreign policy.  A good diplomat can either stop a war from occurring or make sure that it is won. These factors belay the fact that a diplomatic officer cannot be a generalist. He or she has to be specialised in the field to serve correctly and well.
To be an expert in any field or to serve in a specialised job one needs to have two things:
  •    Prior practical experience
  •    Theoretical and historical knowledge of the subject
Only a person who has spent years doing both of the above can become an expert. The same applies to an IFS officer. Two years is not enough to gain a thorough understanding of international relations. One needs to study the nature of the state, international orders, and political systems for years before they can be considered an authority on the topic.
