Understanding The Indian Revenue Service As An IAS Aspirant

Civil Examination Coaching Center, Chennai - Talking About IRS

The civil services examination is meant for aspirants from varying fields. One such area is the IRS. The Indian Revenue Service is the country’s premier financial agency that has a wide variety of duties that encompass all monetary and fiscal matters. They are the department that has the responsibility to collect and administer all taxes – direct and indirect - that are accrued to the Union Government. These include stamp duties, gold control, foreign exchange and central sales tax. It is why IRS is considered under Grade A of the central civil services.
This executive branch of the government is categorised under the Department of Revenue which in turn is under the jurisdiction of the Union Ministry of Finance. The department itself is divided into two branches:
  •    IRS - Customs and Central Excise
  •    IRS - Income Tax
Both offices are controlled and managed by two different and separate entities. The statutory bodies are known as:
  •    Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC)
  •    Central Board of Direct Taxes(CBDT)
The former is the national agency which administers customs, service tax and central tax and the latter is the agency that is responsible for all Direct taxes like the Income Tax Act 1961 and the Wealth Tax Act 1957.
We hope for any applicant who wishes to become an IRS officer; this small piece would help to understand the basic structure of the department. The aim was to give aspirants a clearer understanding of what IRS officers do.
